Grouper and Kingfish Report off St Pete Beach

by Capt. Kevin Walton on April 10, 2011

Gag Grouper has opened in state waters as of April 1st and with a perfectly calm gulf  we’ve  been taking advantage of it. Kingfish have also invaded  the St Pete Beach area and have been providing some drag screaming action.

Bottom fishing in 35 to 40 feet of water has been awesome. We start out with frozen bait such as squid and spanish sardines. What this does is start a feeding frenzy of small red grouper and snapper, this is like a chum slick on the bottom and the big gag grouper come over to check it out. After about 20 minutes of using  dead bait and catching reds and snapper we fire down a big live pinfish and hang on because it wont be long before a 10 to 15 pound gag is pulling your arms off.  Gag grouper have to be 22 inches to keep and you can keep 2 per person per day.

While bottom fishing we always have a free lined live greenback off the back of the boat for kingfish or cobia.  On a recent trip in 40 feet of water we couldn’t keep a  live a greenie in the water for than 2 minutes before a big kingfish would take it. We’re using light spinning gear so these kings are really smoking some line off real and are a lot of fun.
