Spring Break – St Pete Beach and Treasure Island

by Capt. Kevin Walton on March 31, 2011

With the Spring Break crowd here in St Pete Beach I’ve been really busy with family fishing charters. When you have kids on the boat the most important thing is, is to make sure they there is a lot of action. Speckled Trout provided that for us and it was pretty easy to catch 40 – 60 fish a day.

With scaled sardines moving into our area, I started out using those, but I found out quickly the trout weren’t ready to eat them and they were still wanting shrimp. Free lining live shrimp over patchy grass flats around St Pete Beach and Treasure Island provided non stop action. Most of the fish were trout in the 14 to 18 inch range, but there were a lot of big gator trout mixed in, with our biggest being 27 inches. Along with the trout we caught lots of spanish mackerel, blue fish, sharks, flounder and a few pompano.

Look for the flats fishing to get better and better for snook, and redfish and pretty soon the beach fishing is going to break loose for smoker kings and cobia.
