This past week I didn’t have any Tarpon charters and it was a nice change of pace and scenery. We got back on the flats of St Petersburg and Tampa Bay and the fishing was great. Our main target has was trout and redfish, but we also caught snook, flounder, jacks, blue fish and lots of small black tip and bonnet head sharks.
Because of the heat I have been starting my charters at first light and it has really paid off. The trout bite first thing in the morning has been awesome. The bait this time of year is really small and the trout love them. Most of the fish have been in the 16 inch range, but we’re also catching a lot of big trout too. The biggest recently was 25 inches.
Because of the 87 degree water temperature the redfish haven’t wanted to chase any live bait, so they have been a little difficult to chum up. finding the big schools of mullet around the mangrove islands has been the key to finding the reds. Whatever kind of cut bait I’ve been able to get has worked, either ladyfish, pinfish or threadfin has worked really well. Pictured in this report are Tyler and his twin brother Parker from Colorado. They got on a nice little school of reds and landed 13 of them, with biggest being 31 inches.
Even though its hot fishing is still good and will continue through the summer. Tarpon are still here and there is plenty of action on the flats. Give me call 727-638-0975
