Last week was a great week of Speckled Trout fishing. Not only in numbers, but also the size of the fish. My fishing charters caught several fish over 20 inches and the biggest was 27 inches. All of the fish were caught around St Pete Beach and lower Tampa Bay.
There are many ways to catch trout, but lately we’ve just been using live bait over the grass flats. Fishing in 4-6 feet of water produced the most fish, but larger ones were in the 2-3 foot depths. This time of year the fish are full of eggs so we like to practice catch and release on the larger sized trout. You are allowed four fish between 15 and 20 inches per person, one of the four can be over 20, but it’s a good practice the release any trout over 20 inches.
Along with the trout we caught lots of Bluefish and Spanish Mackerel. Closer to the shore along the docks we caught Redfish, Snook and Gag Grouper.
Spring is coming early and the fishing is getting better and better.
