Tampa Bay Flats Fishing Report – Inshore Fishing Charters

by Capt. Kevin Walton on June 14, 2011

Being that it is mid June most of the focus is on Tarpon and while the Tarpon fishing has been good, the flats fishing is still producing some great action.

In between Trapon Trips we have been free lining live shrimp on the grass flats of Tampa Bay and catching a good number of species. Trout, mackerel, blue fish, small sharks and lady fish have provided some great non stop action. Catching lady fish has been the ticket. Most consider them a junk species but they are actually very fun to catch and provide a great aerial display, but their real value is that they are great bait for redfish.

As the water continues to warm to mid 80’s the redfish begin to be a little sluggish and don’t want to chase a live bait. Casting out a chunk of lady fish on to the flats of Tampa Bay is like filet mignon to the reds. Using cut bait is a little different and sometimes it takes them a little longer to find it, but once they do its game on. My inshore charters have had several fish over 30″ this past week and the biggest was 35″

It’s hot down here and so is the fishing, tarpon, snook, trout, reds, sharks we can do it. Give us a call 727-638-0975
