Summer Fishing Report – St Pete Beach, Treasure Island, Maderia Beach

This summer is flying by and can’t believe its already August. I have to be better at posting monthly fishing reports but it’s hard when you are on the water everyday.

This tarpon season was the toughest one I can remember. We had some good catches off St Pete Beach, but there were so many days where we either didn’t see any Tarpon or they were just everywhere, but not biting. When booking a Tarpon fishing charter it’s never a guarantee, but this past season was just extremely hard.

The redfish fishing has been pretty consistent in the St Petersburg area. Over the last few moths my charters have been catching reds from St Pete Beach to Indian Rocks beach. When timed right with the tides the redfish bite has been phenomenal. I have had some fishing trips recently that caught over 30 reds before 9am. Pictured is my main man Vaughn and his son Brock with his first red.

Out on the grass flats of St Pete Beach, Treasure Island and Madeira Beach there is been plenty of fishing action. Speckled Sea Trout have been plentiful as well as small sharks. You can put kids on all the game fish in the world, but there’s something about catching sharks that they never forget. In the past 2 weeks the Spanish mackerel have really come in strong and it’s a really good sign of what is hopefully going to be a great mackerel run this fall.

The state of Florida is going to be opening Snook for harvest on September 1st. They have been closed since January of 2010 due to sever fish kill because of an abnormally cold winter we had in 2009-2010. However they will remain closed on my boat and I hope more fishing charters, guides and recreational fisherman will do the same. I really believe theses fish need more time recover and are too valuable to our fishery to kill them. I have been catching really nice snook as of late and hope to see more and more show up in the area.

August is nearly full and I’m starting to book trips for September so don’t wait to book. Kingfish season is right around the corner! Call today 727-638-0975
